FE Trustnet verdict
Overall, performing better than the peer group composite. However, over a long track record, the manager has, period by period, over- and under-performed roughly equally. Good stockpicking has had a material positive impact on results, which have tended to be relatively better in a rising market.
Manager profile
Knott graduated from Cambridge University (Trinity College) with an MA in Economics. He started his career in the City in 1980 working for the Family Stockbroking Firm and subsequently Greig Middleton, to whom the firm was sold. Knott trained as an analyst and subsequently moved into fund management. He has also been involved in number of USM listings and is an investment director at the Rights & Issues Investment Trust, which he has run since 1984. He has also managed the Discretionary Unit Trust since launch in 1990 and both funds are run in a similar style

Performance vs peer group composite: Simon Knott
How a manager matches up against his peers gives you some idea of how talented he is. Very few managers perform equally well in rising and falling markets, so knowing which type of market a manager is capable of performing well within is also important.
