FE Trustnet verdict
Overall, performing worse than the peer group composite. Over a long track record, the manager has underperformed the peer group more often than not. Stockpicking has not really benefited results, which have tended to be relatively better in a rising market.
Manager profile
Charlie joined Smith & Williamson in June 2009 as fund manager for the Smith & Williamson UK Equity Growth and Smith & Williamson UK Special Situations Trusts; which have since merged under Charlie’s management. Charlie also assists Rupert Fleming on the Smith & Williamson Enterprise Fund. Additionally he has recently taken responsibility for the Smith & Williamson UK Equity Income Trust as fund manager. Charlie has over 20 years experience of the UK equity market, having worked at Rothschild Asset Management, Barings and latterly New Star. Charlie has a degree in Industrial Economics from the University of Nottingham.

Performance vs peer group composite: Charles Deptford
How a manager matches up against his peers gives you some idea of how talented he is. Very few managers perform equally well in rising and falling markets, so knowing which type of market a manager is capable of performing well within is also important.
