How a “Brexit” will affect investors in the UK

17 September 2015

The September issue of Trustnet Magazine, out today, looks at the implications for investors if a referendum on Britain’s membership of the EU produces an unexpected result.

With the UK media focusing its full resources on marking out a 67-year-old sandal-wearing vegetarian as public enemy number one, its obsession with the EU seems to have taken a back-seat for the time being.

This makes it the perfect time to revisit the subject of a “Brexit” without allowing it to be overshadowed by emotions. The latest edition of Trustnet Magazine, out today, looks at the implications for investors if Britain votes to leave the EU. Phil Scott listened to the case for and against Britain’s membership of the common market – you can read the article here if you want to inform your decision ahead of the proposed referendum next year.

It has become fashionable to label all market corrections – which many commentators say could be one result of a Brexit – as “black swan events”. Cherry Reynard looks at why this is incorrect and points to some of the biggest market crashes from history that no one saw coming – one of which is the Asian debt crisis of the late 1990s. In a separate article, Anthony Luzio explains why comparisons between this event and the recent collapse in China may be wide of the mark. Meanwhile, Adam Lewis takes a wider look at emerging markets and asks if the recent falls present a buying opportunity or are just the start of a longer-term decline.

Away from the central theme of this month’s issue, head of Trustnet Direct John Blowers asks why it takes so long to transfer investments between platforms, F&C’s Gary Potter explains why he has bought the Majedie US Equity fund and Aviva’s Chris Murphy reveals his tips for the Rugby World Cup and what their equivalents would be in the UK stock market.

As always, Trustnet Magazine is absolutely free – simply click and read.
