Former M&G bond vigilante Jim Leaviss dies aged 55

Veteran fixed-income investor Jim Leaviss, who spent 27 years at M&G and became one of the UK's best-known bond managers, has died.

Jim Leaviss, the former chief investment officer for fixed income at M&G and one of the UK fund industry's most respected bond investors, has died aged 55.

Leaviss passed away on 23 July 2026, according to a statement from M&G. The firm described him as a “highly respected figure across the investment industry” whose influence extended far beyond the portfolios he managed.

He joined M&G in 1997 and spent 27 years with the company, helping to build its fixed-income business into one of its core investment franchises. During his career, Leaviss became known for his macroeconomic insight, market commentary and distinctive communication style through the Bond Vigilantes blog and the Uncle Jim’s World of Bonds podcast.

Regarded as one of the industry's leading bond managers, he oversaw a number of strategies, including the M&G Global Macro Bond fund. in 2024, he retired from M&G, announcing plans to pursue a master's degree in the history of art after nearly three decades in fixed income.

Stefan Isaacs, co-head of macro credit at M&G, said: "Jim was one of those rare individuals who left an indelible impression on everyone fortunate enough to work with him. I had the privilege of working alongside him for more than 20 years. He was a formidable leader, exceptionally bright, endlessly creative and gifted with the rare ability to make bond markets both engaging and enjoyable. 

Claudia Calich, former head of emerging market debt at M&G, added: "Jim had a unique ability to connect with people, bringing warmth, wisdom and humour to every interaction. I feel fortunate to have known and worked alongside him, and I will always remember the energy, encouragement and perspective he brought to those around him.
